چکیده

Analogy making is a highly sophisticated cognitive process in which two stimuli are compared and analyzed for common patterns. Analogical reasoning is the adaptation of knowledge about one stimulus such that it can be applied to the second stimulus and new analogous inferences can be drawn. Analogy making requires intelligence, since such analogous patterns and transfers often are not obvious and require a certain conceptualization of the stimuli. Intelligence tests often use proportional analogies, where subjects have to find a follow-up for a series of geometric figures. Heuristic-Driven-Theory-Projection (HDTP) is a formal system for analogy making and analogical reasoning. This paper shows how HDTP can be used to analyze proportional analogies between geometric figures. It uses VREG, a language of perception developed by Dastani (1998), to compute different Gestalts from 2-dimensional geometric figures. Depending on the Gestalt perception, HDTP proposes analogical inferences at different levels of cognitive plausibility. Since HDTP describes stimuli formally in first-order logic, it is possible to separate the description of a concrete stimulus from the specification of general Gestalt principles of perception. Therefore it is possible to generate conceptualizations of geometric figures on the fly (called re-representation). The ability of automatic re-representation is one of the central advantages of HDTP compared to other analogy models.

Solving Geometric Proportional Analogies with the Analogy Model HDTP

Intelligence tests often use geometric proportional analogies to examine the intelligence quotient of humans. Completing such a series of geometric figures can be a cognitively demanding task, because the solution requires a suitable conceptualization of the geometric figures. Furthermore, there might exist several, equally correct solutions depending on the conceptualization. In this paper, we...

Spatial Cognition of Geometric Figures in the Context of Proportional Analogies

The cognition of spatial objects differs among people and is highly influenced by the context in which a spatial object is perceived. We investigated experimentally how humans perceive geometric figures in geometric proportional analogies and discovered that subjects perceive structures within the figures which are suitable for solving the analogy. Humans do not perceive the elements within a f...

Typology of Geometric Arrays of Human Figures’ Apparel in the Mina`i Pottery of the 6th and 7th Centuries AH.

Mina`i pottery produced in the late Seljuk and Khwarezmshahi periods under the supervision of pottery masters and painters, is more diverse and magnificent in terms of design and portrait than the previous works. In this group of pottery, human figures have a special place and are often seen in pottery. Various geometric patterns have been used in the apparel of these motifs, which has made ena...

Sketching in Gestalt Space

We present an interactive method that allows users to easily abstract complex 3D models with only a few strokes. The key idea is to employ well-known Gestalt principles to help generalizing user inputs into a full model abstraction while accounting for form, perceptual patterns, and semantics of the model. Using these principles, we alleviate the user’s need to explicitly define shape abstracti...

Perceptual Organization Test (POT) for the Differentiation Between Schizophrenia and Brain Damage

The Perceptual Organization Test (POT) has been designed for the purpose of measuring impairment in cognitive functioning as reflected in a purely perceptual task. Such a test is badly needed in view of the fact that the most widely used tests of perception are not really pure tests of perception. Bender Gestalt (Bender, 1960), for example, requires a certain measure of motor skill in copying n...
